From Mallorca to Miami, industry data indicates that the onboard workload is higher than the crew can handle. Insight from ISWAN shows turnover can reach 50% within a year, with junior crew most at risk. Stress and fatigue are now widely linked to lower performance and higher safety risk, highlighting the strain of sustained workload at sea.

Against this backdrop, Carla Brothers established Purser Support to support captains, crew and yacht managers as demands continue to rise. Drawing on more than ten years as a purser, Brothers has seen a clear change in how yachts are run.

“Purser Support reflects a wider shift across the sector. Admin tasks are no longer kept on board, they are moving ashore. More and more, captains are the ones starting the conversation. Their role now spans compliance, crew logistics, budgets, yard work and guest plans, often at the same time.”

Crew travel, once straightforward, now brings added pressure. Cross-border rules, visa needs and tight crew rotations require careful planning and constant checks. Handling this ashore helps remove delays and keeps crew changes smooth.

For owners and yacht managers, rules set by the International Maritime Organization, Lloyd’s Register and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency call for ongoing monitoring and strict compliance.

Purser Support shapes its role around each yacht, whether during yard phases or busy charter periods, without adding extra crew or fixed packages. Brothers notes: “Senior crew cannot carry all admin tasks alongside daily duties. When that workload shifts ashore, stress falls, focus returns and crew are more likely to stay.”
