GET YOUR EXERCISE AND DOG FIX
Did you know that along with eating healthily, engaging in regular exercise and having sex twice a week – you can actually increase your life expectancy by getting a dog.
Apparently people who own a pet are less stressed, less depressed and can live longer than those who don’t, according to recent research.
The calming effect of owning an animal can even drop blood pressure and reduce your risk of a heart attack, according to University of Minnesota researchers in the US.
Another study found owners who walk their dogs daily lived an average of seven years longer than otherwise similar non-dog owners.
If you do not want to have your own dog then why not volunteer your services to help walk the local dogs rescued in the local centres . By the way is another way to live longer – to engage in voluntary work. A long-term US study found that people who volunteered regularly over a lifetime lived significantly longer than those who didn’t.
Volunteers also experienced less depression, fewer pains and better general health.
Every year new dogs and pups are abandoned and these shelters work really hard to try to re home them. In the meantime their health needs to be seen to, they need to be fed and yes walked – taken outside their cages to stretch their legs.
What an excellent way to engage in walking and have some purpose ?
Follow Palma Dogs on Facebook with Caroline Stapley ( who does a huge amount of commendable work ) and find out how you can help the local rescue centres with dog walking . Abandoned dogs and pups here on the island is sadly a growing phenomena and if you could just give up a morning to let these pooches out of their cages and stretch their legs it makes a real difference
The rescue centres are dotted all over the island but getting in touch through the Facebook group or dropping me a line we can hook you up with some transport to get you out of town.
Otherwise all the centres take charitable donations to help pay for food, injections, operations and injuries to the little fellas.
Adopted dogs come with a chip and are responsibly seen to.
