The government of Puerto Rico said yesterday that it is seeking proposals to build a marina for superyachts, while converting the Port of San Juan’s dry dock into a refit and repair centre. The announcement was made in a statement by Ingrid Colberg Rodriguez, executive director of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, and Alberto Baco Bague, secretary of Economic Development and Commerce.
Colberg said the local economy could gain between US$200,000 and US$300,000 for every superyacht that docks at the marina. “We have in Puerto Rico the resources and qualified human capital to meet the demand for work required by luxury megayachts,” she said.
The government said that the Caribbean lacks an industrial maritime center that can fill the needs of superyachts. “Vessel repair is taking off in Puerto Rico and we have an enormous potential for growth,” said Baco. “That is what we want to achieve with these efforts, to continue diversifying the economy and promoting its growth.”
He added that the long-term goal is to make Puerto Rico a single destination for all marine-related services.
