Dutch new build snap shot

Dutch superyacht builders signed contracts for 22 vessels in 2014 – down from 23 in 2013, according to Netherlands Maritime Technology, an alliance of Dutch shipyards and their suppliers.

That was down from 36 orders in 2013. But the NMT said in its annual report that the value of the 2014 contracts was €1.5 billion, more than in 2013. It added the 2014 figures reflect “the increasing size and value of the new orders.”

The report added that several Dutch superyacht makers are “expanding their construction facilities to cope with increasing demand.”

While some export markets for Dutch superyacht builders “became slightly more unstable during 2014, other export markets compensated for this thanks to the weaker euro,” it added.

The report paints a rosy outlook for Dutch superyacht builders saying they ended 2014 with a total of 70 orders – four more than at the end of 2013 – and worth more than €4 billion.

The previous record for Dutch builders was €3.5 billion in 2007. The value of Dutch order books at the end of 2013 was €2.7 billion.

Deliveries from Dutch yards slipped in 2014: 16 superyachts worth €649 billion, down from 23 in 2013 when orders were value €807 billion. This reflects the global economic situation when the orders were originally signed three to four years ago.
