Mallorca Hiking : Monastic wandering from S’Arraco

This walk requires stamina and a good deal of energy. However, it is a fabulous circular route with lots of variety and lots of highlights – a real treat!

Starting in the sleepy village of S’Arraco we set off for this classic Mallorcan circuit across the majestic Tramuntana foothills, combining woodland, limestone wilderness and panoramic coastal views. After a picnic lunch stop at abandoned mountain dwellings we walk on towards the ruins of an abandoned Trappist monastery overlooking the sleeping Dragonera island. Along this route there are a number of look out points with outstanding views of the south west coast….

After exploring the ruins of the old community dwellings, including the old windmill, we have another short climb to the Coll de ses Animes before descending on a wide and windy track back to S’Arraco.

Our return route also offers a number of different options – we could divert to the little fishing village of Sant Elm for a swim from the beach there, or get another glimpse of Dragonera island from the ruined tower at Cala Basset…. or simply stroll back to S’Arraco.

Highlights

Spectacular views over the Dragonera Island and the interesting ruins from the old monastery.
