Prevention of Pollution by Sewage

Annex IV of Marpol contains a set of regulations regarding the discharge of sewage into the sea from vessels, including regulations regarding the vessels equipment and systems for the control of sewage discharge, the provision of facilities at ports and terminals for the reception of sewage, and requirements for survey and certification.

The discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited, except when the vessel has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant or when the vessel is discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage using an approved system at a distance of more than three nautical miles from the nearest land. Sewage which is not comminuted or disinfected has to be discharged at a distance of more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land.

The Marine Environmental Protection Committee of the IMO adopted MEPC 227(64) which ostensibly changes the discharge requirements and test protocols adopted by Resolution MEPC 159(55), with the specific aim of reducing nitrogen and phosphorous from the treated water, preventing the acceleration of nitrification of the seas.

Legislation to protect our environment is becoming more stringent every day.
