28 October – 4 November
Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, Palma
By the time this issue of The Islander lands, Mallorca’s favourite film festival is in full swing. Good news: there’s still time to catch it. Now in its 15th edition, EMIFF opened at Palma’s Palau de Congressos and closes at the Teatre Principal, with eight days of independent cinema in between. Screenings run daily from 4pm until midnight, so you can squeeze in a film, or one of the talks, masterclasses and networking events on the programme. For the first time, the festival also spills over into Calvià. Palomitas? Yes, please!
6-8 November and 11-13 December
X Dragon Winter Series, Puerto Portals
Winter is when the Dragons come out to play. Now in its 10th edition, this two-round regatta circuit brings top national and international sailors to Puerto Portals for a proper dose of classic sailing. The Dragon, drawn by Johan Anker in 1929, was an Olympic class from 1948 to 1972, and around 1,500 boats are still active in more than 26 countries. Puerto Portals has become home to the largest Dragon fleet in Spain and a benchmark on the international circuit. Two weekends, one timeless class, and plenty of sea air.
19 November
Dijous Bo, Inca
Every year in mid-November, the town of Inca, in the heart of Mallorca, turns into one giant market. Dijous Bo, or “Good Thursday”, is a tradition with roots going back centuries, when farmers came from across the island to trade livestock and stock up before winter. Today it’s the island’s biggest and most beloved country fair, drawing around 200,000 visitors, and the grand finale of Inca’s autumn fair season. Expect livestock shows, stands of farm machinery, leather and ceramics, and traditional restaurants serving up hearty Mallorcan classics. Go early and bring an appetite (and a bag for some local goodies).
21 November
Palma Christmas lights switch-on, Parc de la Mar, Palm
If you’re an Islander, you’ll know that the switch-on of Palma’s Christmas lights is not taken lightly. This year, Palma is kicking off Christmas with a new backdrop. The official switch-on moves to Parc de la Mar, with the Cathedral looming behind, and finishes with a countdown before the lights come on across the city. Wrap up warm (well, Mallorca-warm) and bring your best “ooh” and “aah”.
11 December – 6 January
Christmas Market, Puerto Portals
A yachtie favourite, and rightly so. From 11 December, the marina lights up as a winter village, with more than sixty wooden stalls dressed in fairy lights and fir trees. Browse decorations, accessories, wooden toys and plenty of unique gifts. There’s a full programme of activities and yes, a skating rink is a must. A festive market for the whole family.
12-13 December
MORE Mallorca Christmas Market, Finca Son Mir, Palma
MORE Mallorca returns to Finca Son Mir, just outside Palma, with a weekend market dedicated to Mallorcan brands and local products. Browse the stalls, then refuel with food from Fosh Catering and a few food trucks, washed down with something warm. Island musicians play across both days, there are workshops for the little ones, and Santa himself drops by. And if you can’t make it, don’t worry: Christmas markets pop up all over Mallorca at this time of year, so check your local listings to find one close to home or to when you are staying.
