#ThrowbackThursday: Royal Huisman’s Athena

Repeat customers are nothing new for a number of shipyards, includingRoyal Huisman. So few people blinked when Jim Clark, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur, commissioned a new sailing superyacht from the Dutch builder after having taken delivery of Hyperion from the company in 1998. However, when Athena launched in 2004, plenty of people did indeed blink. Here was a 295-foot (90-meter) yacht that marked several significant milestones. Athena was among the top 100 largest yachts in the world, and she was one of the largest yachts of any type to be built in The Netherlands.

Athena remains significant 11 years later. Even though bigger sailing yachts have been built by other yards,Athena is still among the top five largest afloat. The three-masted schooner still turns heads with her classic styling, too. From her long, lovely bowsprit and figurehead to the tops of her masts and back down to her transom, Athena embodies the romance of life afloat.
