Smooth sailing south: speed, superstition, and life on board

The ship’s journal from the Delivery from Mallorca to Fiji

Update 16/01/25 1500CET 45Nm NW from Rabat.

Apart from a very long gentle swell from the northwest, the Ocean is flat here. Conditions onboard at the marina in Palma were probably worse than they are now! Meanwhile we are flying south at +8,5 knots, regularly hitting double digit speed under full main and genoa.

In the last 24 hours we covered a good 154 Nm including leaving Gib and crossing a very busy traffic separation scheme in the strait followed by negotiating the currents to get around Morocco’s NW Cap Spartel.

Uncle Jan cut off Ocean’s wrist cast which he had since falling off his surf-skate in the marine. He is obviously happy to be fully mobile again! Sara started the day with pancakes without getting nauseous! An made delicious falafel-filled pitas for lunch.

Charlie Beau followed the captain’s orders to spit on the fishing lure because it’s good luck when a lady does so. In the first 2 hours, no fish reported though.

Charlie, who -at home- has a feisty temper and volatile emotions, is a different person at sea. She’s cheerful and rather industrious. At certain moments, she opens her “bar”, fully ignoring the opening hours she stuck to the glass door of the saloon. Everybody can order what they want and Mama turned out to be “her best client”.

With every mile we are more confident that we made it out of Orca Alley unscathed.

Everything is going incredibly smoothly, and there’s no place I’d rather be!

A short poll reveals that the other crew members share my sentiments!
