Preparing for departure after hard work and high waves

The ship’s journal from the Delivery from Mallorca to Fiji

Update 23/01/25 1900 GMT Las Palmas.

After a day of intense cleaning, Tuesday was our lay-day. Since we’re not the type to just lie around, we headed to the beach. Oceaan and I wanted to go wave surfing. For the same reason that we didn’t stay any longer in Gibraltar than we did, the surf conditions were beyond our level of skill. The large depression between the Azores, Madeira, and Morocco caused waves over 3 meters high. While Jan and Sara explored the town, An and Charlie Beau met us at the beach. We went for a walk and a swim. For dinner we all met up and enjoyed a Cuban Creole meal. It propelled An and I forward in time to the street food restaurants in Marigot St Martin and all the other nice things about the Caribbean. As we recounted stories, the crew’s excitement for the next leg of the journey increased by the second.

But first, there was more work to do! Before sunrise and thus before the seabreeze set in, we started the wrestling match with the Code Zero. In windless conditions it wasn’t all that hard to get the whole sail properly unfurled and furled again. We can now close that chapter!

Provisioning orders, complete watermaker service and repair of two leaks, service of both engines, figuring out a transfer system for our 1000L additional delivery fuel tank, inspection of chainplates, deepclean of engine rooms, hauling provisions on board, fixing a million small issues… We haven’t been bored at all!

Add to that the homeschooling tasks and just general daily tasks.

As the worklist gets shorter, we all begin looking forward to our departure. Life at sea is actually more structured.

The weather from Saturday onwards is looking very promising. ETD Saturday 26/01/25 2pm.
