Today we have attended the presentation of the extension of the Marine Reserve of the Toro Island and the Malgrats Islands. We send you a communiqué where we expose our point of view and several data to put the news in context.

Communiqué in Spanish: https://marilles.org/es/post/la-ampliacion-de-las-islas-del-toro-y-malgrats

We are happy that the marine reserve has been extended. It is cause for celebration and a step in the right direction. But before the euphoria breaks out, we need to put things in context. The new reserve is a bit weak because it does not reach as far as Illa del Sec and because it only includes 7.5% of the highly protected area. On the other hand, it is true that the Balearic Islands leads the state in terms of marine surface area, but only 0.2% of its sea has been declared an integral reserve. We need to multiply the highly protected area by 50 before 2030 if we want to achieve the commitment of declaring 10% of the sea as highly protected before 2030. If we compare ourselves with the rest of the state, we get the highest mark, but we continue to fail. More ambition is needed.
