39th Copa del Rey MAPFRE update – Day 3

Nic Asher, crew member on Alegre in IRC 1 class: “Today the conditions were unstable, and that made the two races of the day quite difficult. The wind dropped in intensity and then, on the last leg, it picked up, with our rivals closing in. The finish was very tight: we won the last race by just one second and four seconds ahead of third. It’s been a good competition for everyone, for all the TP52s. The racing has been intense and it’s good to have a reference of where we are.
We are really enjoying this regatta. It’s Palma: there’s sun, wind, it’s a fantastic city and it has an amazing race course. We are still not convinced by the scoring system… If something goes wrong now it’s a bummer, as it really penalizes you as there are no discards. But that’s the way it is and that’s what we’ve accepted…”.

Vasco Vascotto, Bronenosec 50 tactician in ClubSwan 50 class:
“We have a song back home in Trieste that basically says “you’re either super high or super low” and that’s the way it is in this fleet. If you don’t sail well, you can be way down. We are in the midst of learning as a crew. Obviously you’re going to have some bad times at times, and for me it’s not easy, because of course I haven’t sailed for two and a half years. It’s great to be back doing what I love, I feel very lucky. I’ve missed this.

Alberto Barovier, Aifos 500 crew member in BMW ORC 1 class:
“We did quite well considering that in the first one of the day we had a very bad start and so we had to work hard to recover and in the end we did better than we expected with fifth, which was a good result considering where we started. In the second race of the day we were second, and so we are second overall. The boat is pretty much the same as at the start, not much has been done to it, the hull has been refreshed and there are some new sails, but the difficulty is that the mast and rig and sails are not like the new boats and so we have to sail accordingly. But now we have found a good balance and it’s going well.”
