The Beast is Unleashed – Sailing yacht NGONI for sale

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to acquire the late Ed Dubois’ last design and commission, 58 metre (190ft) sloop NGONI. The owner of this high-performance sloop famously said: “Build me a beast, don’t build me a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon; fast and furious.” The owner’s vision almost outstripped that of his naval architect.

LATEST NEWS – Built by Royal Huisman and launched in 2017, Ngoni truly is one of the world’s most striking yachts ever built. Her purposeful plumb bow, distinctive reverse sheer lines, full glass deckhouse, cascading tiered aft beach deck and 71m carbon mast does not fail to impress. This is one of the world’s largest sloops with serious ‘wow’ factor and Carrswood Yachts are delighted to be appointed central agent for her sale.

Today, like at her launch, she pushes existing boundaries of superyacht design, deck hardware and materials technology. With its reverse sheer and bow shape, Dubois’ presented a design that was quite a departure from the status quo. Ngoni’s full air-draft is 75m and, with a displacement of nearly 400 tonnes, her sleek exterior conceals a host of innovative engineering to meet the challenges of marrying a huge, powerful rig with a slender and easily driven hull. The carbon rig is 17m higher than the clearance under the Bridge of the Americas near the Panama Canal. The towering mast, built by Rondal, is therefore one of the world’s largest one-piece carbon spars. The distinctive reverse sheer increases strength and load resistance by 12 per cent on a conventional sheer. The Dubois office created by far the most extreme style-to-order boom yet seen.

The stainless steel keel foil is shaped for delivering maximum lift to windward and the flattened torpedo bulb contains all the yacht’s 73 tonnes of lead ballast. With the hydraulic lifting keel down (8.1m) she can reach upwind speeds of 17.5 knots – all aided by the yacht’s low profile and sleek uncluttered deck. In addition, another significant technical challenge the project overcame was with the deckhouse windows that are curved in two planes -made possible by Turkish builders BCM.

Ngoni’s interior follows the exterior lines and is modern, organic and curved. Styled by Rick Baker Ltd, three stunning staterooms are accessed by a sweeping stairwell where the owner’s suite, separate office and very well equipped gym are located. Not surprisingly, there are also several show stopping works of art and features on board.

Ngoni is an east African word for the name the native people there and the language, which reflects the unique concept and essence that Royal Huisman made a reality.

The asking price for Ngoni is €45,000,000.
