New Zealand’s leading news site Stuff checked in with America’s Cup challenger Terry Hutchinson, skipper and executive director of American Magic, for his view on recent and long range events:
Regarding their recent capsize:
“The best part about it was we’d done it 19 times in our Mule. We righted the boat, did a systems check and a rig check and sailed for another two hours after the fact. It wasn’t nearly as impressive as some of the wipeouts I’ve had on a traditional monohull. We were going at pace, for sure. At the same time the boat decelerates, so it does happen in slow motion. You are tuned into everything. In the leeward side, our biggest concern is the guys underneath the mainsail and making sure everyone stays safe which they did.” Full report.
Designing an AC75:
“Probably the hardest part of where all the teams are in this part of the program is that already the result has been decided. By that I mean the designers have designed. All the teams have their boat twos, the teams are working on their foils so there will be a little bit of reaction to what you see the other teams are doing. (But) Fortunately or unfortunately, some races are already predetermined.” Full report.
