Save The Date! Registration Opened For The XV Viareggio Gathering Of Historic Sailboats – Tirrenia II Cup Return After 80 Years

On October 17-20, for the 15th year in a row, the Tuscan city of Viareggio will be the official host of the Viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats.  Registration is now open for what over three quinquennium has become the most important end-of-season Mediterranean regatta and gathering of vintage and classic sailboats.   A highlight is the return, after 80 years, of the historic Tirrenia II Cup.  The Cup was awarded until 1939 to the vintage vessel having the longest Mediterranean navigation. It will now be awarded to the boat with the most interesting documented offshore cruise.

LAST STOP FOR THE ARTIGLIO TROPHY
The Viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats (www.velestoricheviareggio.org) is celebrating its 15th edition. From October 17th to the 20th this beautiful Tuscan coastal city will host the most important and best attended end-of-season gathering of vintage, classic, historic and traditional sailboats.  The event is a source of pride for the Viareggio Association of Historic Sailboats, founded in 2005, and for the Club Nautico Versilia, which, as it has in past years, is making available its prestigious headquarters, berths and welcome areas.  After stops in Livorno (International sailing Week), Viareggio (Admiral G. Francesco Trophy), Le Grazie (Historic Sailboats in the Gulf) and La Spezia (Mariperman Trophy next September 28-29), the event is also the fifth and last stop for the 2019 Artiglio Trophy.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE VIAREGGIO GATHERING OF HISTORIC SAILBOATS

To participate in the gathering (registration at https://velestoricheviareggio.org/iscrizione-imbarcazioni/ ) you do not have to be registered with Viareggio Historic Sailboats and all yachts can compete for the Admiral Florindo Cerri Challenge and the Viareggio Historic Sailboats Trophy. Vessels built by the renowned Sangermani shipyard will compete for the prestigious Sangermani Challenge Trophy.  AIVE   (Italian Association for Vintage Sailboats) is sponsoring the event together with FIV (Italian Sailboat federation) and is in charge of vessel tonnage measurement and classification for those wishing to race with a CIM certified measurement certificate. Three regattas are being planned, to take place from Friday to Sunday.  The award ceremony will take place on the afternoon of the last day at the seat of the Club Nautico Versilia.

DOCUMENT YOUR SUMMER CRUISE AND YOU COULD WIN THE REBORN TIRRENIA II CUP
Every year at the Viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats a boat is chosen to represent the event. This year it will be the Tirrenia II, an 18.54 meter teak gaff ketch designed by British yacht designer Frederick Shepherd and launched in 1914 by the H.R. Stevens shipyard in Southampton. The boat, which has not participated in regattas since 2009, began navigating again officially on June 8 in Viareggio from the Del Carlo shipyard after three years of work. Starting in 1925 the Tirrenia II was associated with an annual Cup established by former ship owner Guido Fiorentino, president of the Royal Yacht Club of Italy in Naples, for the boat with the longest Mediterranean cruise. The Cup was awarded until 1939 when interrupted by WWII. Now, after 80 years, it is returning to encourage the loveliest Mediterranean vintage sailboats to undertake and document interesting offshore cruises. What matters is the cruising component, independently of miles navigated. To award the Cup, a specially appointed panel will examine the documentation presented on the route, stops and distances covered.

EXHIBITS AND VINTAGE BOAT MODELS
The 15th edition of the Viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats will host a number of exhibits and activities. There will be a “Welcome Aboard” (tours of the boats); an exhibit of the work of watercolorist Emanuela Tenti and of Marco Trainotti’s photographs of vintage boats. There will also be an exhibit of scale models of vintage boats that is also open to any ship owner who wishes to display a model of his ship. Participants will be able to visit restoration work on vintage vessels at the Del Carlo shipyard that will host the annual grand feast on Saturday evening for ship owners and crews. To apply to be a regatta crewmember or to board the Pandora and Nellie sailboats to watch the races up close at sea please visit the Association’s website.
