Multihull Cup – Palma de Mallorca 2018
As competing teams have dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s, the stage is set for some spectacular racing at Port Adriano’s Multihull Cup, a fun, competitive regatta devised to give 50’+ performance cruising multihullsthe opportunity to flaunt their racing prowess. This 2018 event will also serve as an electrifying reunion for previous entrants: Allegra, Coco de Mer, Dragon and R-Six have all taken part in the regatta’s first edition, which took place in September 2016. The fact that it won’t be the first time these avid racers have tried to outfox one another makes the next days’ racing all the more exciting.
This year’s powerful line-up, set to put on a real spectacle and guaranteed to keep multihull enthusiasts on the edge of their seats, is made up of a gunboat, McConaghy, Hudson Hakes and Green Marine-built boat. Competing catamarans range from 66 to 84 ft. and California-based designers Morrelli & Melvin, the brains behind the Olympic Nacra class, lay claim to two of the regatta’s entrants.
One of the cats from the Morrelli & Melvin drawing board includes 2016 winner R- Six. Her lines are the result of three America’s Cup campaigns, previously designed yachts that have broken ‘around the world’ and 24-hour records. No doubt this super cat will sail all-out in order to hold on to the hard-fought trophy she won during the regatta’s 2016 edition.
However, 2016 runner up Coco de Mer, another Morrelli & Melvin marvel, has her sights firmly set on outsmarting R-Six and snatching the overall trophy this year, there’s no two waysabout it. Coco de Mer’s navigator Bill Lacey enthused: “We’re able to welcome sailing legend Loïck Peyron and Gunboat Managing Partner Benoit Lebizay onboard for the racing this year. It also looks like the wind is filling in so in the words of Fred Flintstone.. yabba dabba doo!”
The fleet will sail three idyllic coastal courses over Friday, Saturday and Sunday and racing is scheduled to start at 11.30 tomorrow. To ensure tight yet fair racing between opponents, the MHC will be implementing the MultiRule, a rating with a heavy focus on objectivity and clarity. The MultiRule has been specifically conceived for 40 ft + multihulls and is engineered so a team’s synergy, not boat design, cinches victory.
Tight racing and hair-raising turf wars are perfectly balanced up by the cold drinks, friendly banter and laid-back vibe, which await sailors back on the dock.
We’re proud to announce that the Multihull Cup is a (Sailors for the Sea-certified) Clean Regatta. This means both event organizers and event-host Port Adriano are committed to encouraging and facilitating crew to cut down on the use of single-serve plastic.A few of theinitiatives that will be implemented include Port Adriano’s ‘Green Team’, stainless-steel water bottles supplied by Rigging Projects and CleanWave’s 600-litre water station.
The Multihull Cup, an exciting regatta enabling some of the world’s fastest catamarans to race competitively, will take place in Port Adriano from the 6thuntil the 9thof September 2018.
