Throughout this year and 2019, three new marinas are set to be opened in the Adriatic country of Montenegro. The small scenic state was put on the global yachting map through the development of the former naval base at Tivat transforming it into the Porto Montenegro marina.

Next month the first phase of the first of two marinas at the Lustica Bay development will be opened. This phase includes 50 berths out of a planned 176 when the marina is fully completed. Yachts up to 35m (115ft) will be able to be accommodated. In addition, there will be some space for larger yachts and, eventually, moorings outside the marina for larger super yachts.

The marina’s streamlined, sustainable design will be further enhanced by a range of services including 24-hour yacht assistance, repairs and maintenance, electricity, security and a multilingual professional team. A later part of the development includes the construction of a smaller private marina to serve a number of high-end properties.

Lustica Bay is a development by the Egyptian Orascom Development Group which operates a clutch of marinas in Egypt, Jordan, Montenegro and has a future project planned for the UK. The whole development is a mixed used project including a large range of residential accommodation, retail and commercial outlets, hotels and a marina village.

Inside Boka Bay, the biggest of the two developments is Portonovi marina which is a 238-berth facility able to accommodate superyachts up to 120m (394ft). The infrastructure for this marina is now completed but it will not be officially opened until 2019. The marina, which was planned by the UK consultants, Marina Projects Ltd, is now under the management of the Turkish D-Marin group having signed an agreement with the owners Azmont Investments.

The Portonovi marina is at the centre of a huge resort development which includes the first One&Only Hotel in Europe. With its involvement and its considerable experience from running a network of 11 marinas across the eastern Mediterranean, D-Marin, it aims to develop the activities around the marina.

Equipped with the most advanced technology and features, the marina offers high-end services at competitive prices.

Portonovi Marina, which will also serve as a customs entry, will respond to needs such as water, electricity, shower, laundry and gas stations. The total investment for the Portonovi projects is €650m.

A couple of years ago D-Marin was operating the 300-berth Dukely Budva marina in Montenegro and it planned to undertake a completed redevelopment of the facility. This relationship has now ended and the plans for the Budva marina which can take superyachts up to 70m(230ft) is unknown.

The third of the new developments is the Lazure marina located at Meljine. This new project, when completed later this year, will offer 150 berths up to 30m (98.5ft) long and include a hotel, bar, café and spa and fitness facilities. The marina will include a customs and border post for ease of clearance for visiting yachts.

The marina was due to have been opened about now but bad weather in March delayed construction. A Lazure marina spokesman commented to IBI: “We are now slipping right into seasonal ban on construction, which means we shall pause until touristic season’s end to resume it. The opening therefore has been rescheduled to mid-to-late autumn.

The other outstanding Montenegro project is the redevelopment of the Bijela shipyard across the bay from Porto Montenegro. This is planned to become a superyacht refit and repair facility as a joint venture between the marina and the Dutch Damen shipbuilding group which also owns Amels.
