WORLDWIDE NEWS
Amongst all the daily political news, I was upset to read a recent article about the death of some of the beloved swimming pigs in the Bahamas. Initially thought to have been alcohol poisoning, it was determined that several of them died from their fame ingesting too much sand while foraging for food left behind on the beach from the numerous people on boat tours wanting to feed and swim with these sea loving swine.
In my yachting days, I was lucky enough to have swam with these pigs myself and even though it was over 20 years ago, it is a life experience I hope to take my kids to do one day. Sadly though, there’s only about 10 left on the island which is a great shame, but the good news is that these pigs haven’t died in vain as it is now spurring new laws to protect them and stop people from plying them with rum!
Shortly after reading the article, I saw this quirky painted pig for sale and couldn’t resist him – I took it as a sign and so in homage to the poor little piggies that died, he now sits on the bar at The Boathouse, waiting desperately to be named! We thought we’d have some fun and throw it out to you to come up with one. We’ve even created a cocktail in his honour…. The ‘Bahamian Iced Tea’ with vodka, gin, tequila, triple sec, blue curacao and a sour mix over ice topped with soda – not for the fainthearted!!
So, if you think you’ve got a ‘crackling’ good name (sorry I just had to) pop down and throw your name in the hat and help us bring awareness to their survival, after all, we may still be waiting to see pigs fly but on this small uninhabited island these pigs can definitely swim!
Wishing you all a great month and see you soon.

The swimming pigs have populated the island for decades and had become such a lifeblood for the community. Their actual origin is somewhat of a mystery but local legend claims they swam ashore after a shipwreck or were left on the island by sailors who planned to come back and eat them, but never returned.
