The Caribbean regatta season is well underway. March is a big month in the sailing calendar with The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Virgin Gorda, BVI and the St Barths Bucket in St Barthelemey. Aside from Antigua Classics in April, The Caribbean has historically been all geared up towards the more modern super yacht fraternity but gradually the bigger regattas are starting to invite classics to participate. This can only be seen as good news.
At The Mount Gay Round Barbados Race week there were four classic entries for the round island race. Schooner Adix and Matt Barker’s The Blue Peter vied for pole position with Paul Goss and his crew on the mighty Spanish schooner piping Matt by 45 mins to the post and more importantly the parties and rum. The Blue Peter did however smell the sweet success of victory in the Cruising Division taking 1st place overall in her class over 3 days racing.
On the 20-24th February, The RORC Caribbean 600 Race departing from Antigua has the big schooners, Adix, Eleonora and Adela as well as once again The Blue Peter representing the classic division. It looks set to be some competitive racing especially between the larger yachts.
MEDITERRANEAN 2017
Meanwhile back in the Mediterranean dates for The Regatta Calendar 2017 are slowly coming together. I am excited to share these dates with you for the summer season as announced by the organisers. If you are looking for links to the event websites and for a full international regatta calendar including the US and UK and for vintage, classic and spirit of tradition yachts go to my website for a Free download: www.alicewiddows.com.
Well known yachts such as the trio of Herreshoffs, NY50 Spartan and NY40’s Rowdy and Chinook will be back recharged in time for the official Panerai season opener, Les Voiles d’Antibes in early June to defend their positions and enjoy some rivalry both on and off the water. The Blue Peter will also make a much anticipated return to The Mediterranean making her debut at Regatta Illes Balears Classics in Palma de Mallorca in August. The big question is are we ready? Are you?!
THE CLASSIC BOAT AWARDS 2017
Who rocks your boat?
It is your last chance to vote at The Classic boat Awards 2017 on-line www.classicboat.co.uk/awards2017. Last month I gave you an in – depth over view of some of the most significant nominations from the most popular categories. Given the subject matter of this column I think it only fitting that I showcase my three favourite classic racing yachts who will be actively on the regatta circuit, looking for YOUR vote:
Marilee NY40 the gaff rig sloop is a contender for The Restoration of the Year over 40ft (12.1m) . Built in 1926 she is designed and built by NG Herreshoff and Herreshoff Mfg Co. Marilee has undergone a transformational refit over 2 years including the hull reshape and form and a completely new contemporary interior. The attention to detail is painstaking bringing new life and a look to a classic yacht that has never been seen before. See her racing hard on the East Coast USA this summer as she continues to defy convention. More images on www.ny40marilee.com
Andre Hoek’s Pilot Cutter 55 by Performance Classic Yachts will be an interesting addition to the regatta circuit this summer. She is nominated in The Spirit of Tradition Over 40 ft (12.1m), interesting lines and nice and light, she is going to be one to watch.
And finally The W-22’s, Colt and Filly by W-Class Racing Yacht founder Donald Tofias nominated in The Spirit of Tradition Class under 40 ft (12.1m). Cold-moulded, cute and reassuringly expensive, at 22.10ft the W-22 sails like a rocket ship!
