Dear Islander….

We are very proud to announce that The Islander celebrates its 20th birthday this month !
March 1997 saw John Rule produce the first issue of The Islander, all eight pages of it ! Sadly, I never met John, but I have heard many people talk very fondly of him, and others telling me of his razor sharp wit . It’s a shame he isn’t around to help us celebrate. I’d like to think he’s looking down on us with some pride in seeing the development of the magazine he launched all those years ago still going strong.
Peter Franklin, the second custodian of The Islander is still a regular contributor to this day, and we hope he and his wife Marljin can share in our celebrations later this year when we plan on having a big bash during the summer. Details to follow !
It is almost four years since we took over the reins, and can honestly say it has been the most enjoyable four years of our working lives. We have met some amazing people along the way and made some wonderful friendships, and I’d like to think we have also made a valuable contribution to the Mallorcan wine industry !
Our Nautifest event is getting closer, 20th – 23rd April, and I am happy to say that space is selling well for both events over the four days. We know it is going to be well attended providing both crew and service providers with a successful show. We are looking for potential sponsors for elements of the event, such as the music, a drinks reception, breakfasts etc . Please email mel@theislander.net for any details you need.
Next month also sees the Palma Superyacht Show & Palma Boat Show start on April 28th- May 2nd. This year sees the first special area for the “ Refit & Repair” businesses to showcase their wares in a new development of this enormously successful show. The area sold out almost immediately, a sure sign that this new initiative will be a huge success. There will be around 70 Superyachts on show, with roughly a 50: 50 split between power and sail, making this probably the biggest sailboat Superyacht show in the world. Not bad for a small Mediterranean island !!
Fair Winds !
