As the southern hemisphere superyacht season commences and the NZ Millennium Cup (24-27 January 2017) approaches, platinum sponsor Orams Marine reports a year with more and larger yachts coming to New Zealand for service than previous years.
As New Zealand’s summer season swings into gear, Auckland yard Orams Marine is reporting a successful body of work carried out across 2016.
“At Orams Marine, we’ve had a full year with the busiest winter season to date. The yachts are getting bigger, there are more of them, and the work itself is more technically demanding. This is testimony that the industry and the NZ Millennium Cup Organising Committee, the NZ Marine Export Group, are achieving the goal of profiling New Zealand as a high-quality destination for refit and cruising,” says Orams Marine’s Craig Park.
Refit-work in 2016 at Orams Marine included an annual service and comprehensive work on 39.7-metre Alloy Yachts-built Janice of Wyoming, and the installation of a removable inner forestay and removable bowsprit to 31.78-metre Southern Wind-built Farfalla.
A new competitor in the NZ Millennium Cup, Farfalla’s racing upgrades will see her in performance mode, pitted against returning competitors Janice of Wyoming and Silvertip in the Bay of Islands come 2017.
With more than 120 engineering and maintenance tasks, Orams Marine also carried out extensive work on 62-metre Holland Jachtbouw-built Athos. The most visually-striking of which has seen the hull change from blue to gleaming white with a turquoise boot stripe, highlighted by a gold cover line. Contributing to the refit, NZ Millennium Cup gold sponsors, Doyle Sails replaced the staysail and mainsail with Stratis carbon technora membranes.
“The creation of the NZ Millennium Cup in 2000, nestled between the Louis Vuitton and America’s Cup regattas, was born out of the desire to give superyacht crew and owners an event they could call their own,” says Oram’s Marine’s, Neven Barbour.
“It gave yachts something more to look forward to when they made the journey south, showcasing New Zealand’s outstanding cruising grounds and excellence in marine services.”
Further 2016 work at Orams Marine has included a full hull repaint, major rig service and five-year survey on 56-metre Perini Navi, Fidelis, while 27.5-metre motor sailor, Hortense underwent a full repaint and major rig service, and installation of new electrics and teak decking.
“Looking forward, 2017 is set to be another successful year with extensive and varied work aboard several motor and sailing yachts (one of which is 45-metre +) that will give us the opportunity to show the length and breadth of our capabilities,” says Park.
“With this in mind, we are returning as platinum sponsors to again support the industry in an event that personifies the best of Kiwi hospitality – from the camaraderie on the water to the functions onshore – in one of the most iconic of Kiwi locations.”
