Islander Stew of the Month – Anna Katharina Keimberg

What did you do before yachting, and how did your yachting career first begin?

I studied Business and Spanish at university, and worked in sales for Carlsberg Beer in Germany. I then quit my job and did my yoga teacher training in Brazil. I came to Mallorca in 2014 with the intention of staying a while, then got invited to go sailing. I found out about yachting and decided to pursue a life at sea. Since then I’ve worked for charter companies on 9 different sailing yachts 18m – 60m.

What has been your favourite boat you’ve worked on, and why?

Being a sole hostess with a skipper on a charter yacht has been my favourite role, as it’s very flexible and you’re close to the guests. There’s a lot of variety, and you get to plan what you do.

What are the best and worst parts about working onboard?

Best part is being on the sea and being outside most of the time. The worst part is not having the freedom that I have on land, that my time isn’t my own.

How do you keep sane on charter?

Breathing in happiness, breathing out stress!

What are your best strategies for spoiling charter guests?

Giving them what they want before they know that they want it.

What’s the coolest thing you have done for guests?

On my last charter I taught sunrise yoga on deck in the Caribbean – the guests loved it. It’s the perfect way to start a day of holiday sailing.

What is your signature cocktail?

It’s not a cocktail, but I love to make guests fresh iced mint tea – I just steep fresh mint in hot water, then add ice and local honey – really refreshing.

What is your favourite yachting destination?

Greece for the colour of the water, and Barbuda for the beach.

If you owned a superyacht, what would you do differently?

I’d always be nice to everyone! Have a healthy and happy yacht, for the crew and guests.

What career achievement are you most proud of?

Surviving crossing the Atlantic as the only girl in a crew with 5 guys!

Best housekeeping tip/hack?

It’s more of a service tip, but I always like to use fresh and local produce.

Tell us about your funniest embarrassing moment on board.

What’s your favourite adventure in Mallorca?

I love just enjoying the free time and doing simple things, like browsing the markets, going to yoga classes and spending time in cafes!

If you could give your 20yr old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Probably to start yachting at 20 rather than 30! I think I would have liked yachting even more when I was younger.

What’s your plan for the future?

I’m keen to get more into cheffing, so I want to improve my cooking skills and learn more about nutritional health. And keep exploring!
