French shipyard La Ciotat Semidep has chosen Blohm+Voss for the operation of its “Grande Forme”, a 200x60m dry dock for refit and repair. The German shipyard partners with the French company as it wins the public tender set to optimise the use of the public port.
Blohm+Voss will utilize this new facility in the heart of the Mediterranean to maintain and service yachts over 80m in length. Operation is planned to start in November 2016.
Following a meeting held on June 29, the board of directors of Semidep La Ciotat instructed the managing director of French company to negotiate a lease agreement with Blohm+Voss for a period of 35 months.
Blohm+Voss CEO Fred van Beers comments: “Setting up a maintenance facility for megayachts in La Ciotat is an important step in our current growth strategy. With our new office in Monaco and this central location in the Mediterranean we are moving our core business closer to our customers; we are now offering more flexibility and tailored life-cycle- services. Our customers now have the choice of utilizing our extensive shipyard facilities in Hamburg or our new base in La Ciotat for large yacht maintenance, refits or conversions.”
Semidep La Ciotat says in a statement that it received a number of high quality of entries from international applicants and that the proposal presented by the German shipyard was considered to be the best bid based on the three tender criteria:
- The quality of the envisaged project, particularly in relation to the development of business and employment for our territory.
- The credibility of the application, especially with regard to professional, technical and financial strength.
- The quality of the financial proposal, especially with regard to the sharing of loyalty fees with SEMIDEP.
Jean-Yves Saussol, managing director of La Ciotat Shipyards explains: “We have chosen Blohm+Voss as our trusted partner due to the quality of their business plan, their extensive track-record, the financial strength of the company and its strong desire to work closely with the local community.”
The services that Blohm+Voss will bring to La Ciotat complement the services currently offered by other companies on the yard. Blohm+Voss aims to utilize the existing synergy potential and will start talking to future partners on and around the shipyard within the next month.
Blohm+Voss is now taking the next steps to set up the operation. The company will appoint a French-speaking team within the next few weeks to manage the roll-out, recruit local staff, partner with suppliers and prepare the facilities for upcoming projects.
In order to prepare for this rapid build-up in operations, Blohm+Voss plans to meet local companies on the site over the next few days with a view to developing a practical, collaborative approach.
The partnershio between Blohm+Voss and La Ciotat includes a proposed fee arrangement, which introduces a completely new direct profit-sharing system from Semidep, which is proportional to the sales generated by the new provider.
“This system promises to multiply the fee received up to now by five. This money will enable continuing investment in the development of the site,” the French firm explains.
