The yachting world is in shock as a huge fire has caused serious damage to two superyachts in the Turkish town of Marmaris. The fire started at approximately 2am this morning (January 4) on board the iconic 70.68 metre Lürssen The One. Approximately 30 minutes later it spread to neighbouring 52 metre Al Jadaf Barbie.
The fire broke out as stormy conditions battered the Turkish town and firefighters battled for many hours to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
The other nearby yachts in the marina were able to escape to the safety of open water and now wait at anchor while an effort to save the burnt yachts takes place.
The sun rose to reveal the extent of the damage to the two yachts and water used to extinguish the fire is now being pumped from the vessels to try and stop them from sinking.
The One was a breakthrough for Lürssen when she was built in 1973 asCarinthia VI and was the first major yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg.
The well known Lürssen is highly regarded within the industry as Bannenberg revolutionised yacht design. He was responsible for the whole vessel and this new overall approach showed in the design.
Local firefighters work to save the two yachts in Turkey
This is not the first tragedy to befall a yacht built by the original owners, as they built Carinthia VI after Carinthia V hit an uncharted rock on her maiden voyage and sank.
This disaster may be the first of 2016, but follows several yacht related disasters from last year.
