Barcelona road attack scam

Barry Lawrence, owner of Mallorca Cruising, recently informed us of an apparent scam targeting cars arriving into Barcelona from Palma by ferry, particularly those with UK registration plates.

Barry commented, “I first heard of this ‘puncture’ scam several years ago, and we are astonished that the authorities have not clamped down on it. It’s obviously an organised gang and surely the police must know who is to blame.”

The ferries from Palma both arrive at regular times in the early evening. Drivers heading for the motorway north, taking the most direct route from the ferry terminals, must pass along the Ronda Litoral to Port Vell and then past Port Olympic, where they descend the underpass to the main dual carriageway feeding the motorways.

It’s during this overground section, with its many stop-start traffic lights, that drivers are most vulnerable. The scam involves a scooter rider pulling alongside and the pillion passenger stabbing a rear tyre. Tourists with foreign plates are most often targeted.

This has happened at least three times in recent months to people in our community. Below is the detailed account submitted by Kevin Parker to his insurance company, after being scammed:

How the scam works

In summary, the scam typically involves:

  • Slashing the rear tyre discreetly in traffic.

  • Offering “help” once the driver notices the low-pressure alert.

  • Distracting the driver during the wheel change.

  • Stealing luggage or valuables when the vehicle is unlocked or vulnerable.

Range Rovers with keyless entry are especially susceptible, as the proximity of the key fob allows doors to be opened without needing to press unlock.

Stay safe

If you’re arriving in Barcelona by ferry, especially from Palma, be alert during the first 5–10 kilometres of your drive. Avoid pulling over in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. If you suspect a flat tyre, drive to a well-lit petrol station or public place before stopping.

Lock all doors manually (if possible), and never leave valuables within reach.

If you’ve experienced something similar, please share your story with us. Awareness is key.
