Replica Galleon crosses the Atlantic

Captain Jack Sparrow would no doubt raise an eyebrow in admiration watching the historic replica of Ferdinand Magellan’s galleon, NAO Victoria, sail across the Atlantic—not under her own power, but onboard a semi-submersible yacht carrier, surrounded by modern superyachts.

The vessel responsible for this unique passage was Super Servant 4, part of the specialized fleet operated by DYT Yacht Transport, now under the umbrella of Sevenstar Yacht Transport. Designed for carrying yachts and tall ships alike, this float-on, float-off vessel provides a practical and efficient way to reposition even the most unusual maritime guests across oceans.

While NAO Victoria is fully seaworthy and capable of transoceanic travel under sail, her traditional rig and hull design mean such a crossing would take up to two months. For logistical ease and safety, the Spanish foundation managing her—Fundación Nao Victoria—opted to ship her from Spain to Florida aboard the Super Servant 4.

After her offloading in Fort Lauderdale, the 25.9-meter (85-foot) carrack made her way to St. Augustine, where she served as a floating museum over the holiday season. She has since continued her cultural exhibition tour along the U.S. East Coast, offering visitors a unique educational experience on board, recounting the story of Magellan’s epic voyage—the first circumnavigation of the globe.

Built for the Universal Exposition in Seville in 1992, NAO Victoria is the product of meticulous historical research, drawing on over 160 archival documents, shipbuilding treaties, engravings, and even the remains of 16th-century vessels. She brings to life the story of the original NAO Victoria, which, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, completed the first successful circumnavigation in 1522 after Magellan’s death in the Philippines.

The ship continues to serve as a living classroom, bridging centuries of maritime history and reminding modern sailors of the courage and endurance behind the Age of Exploration.
