27 m yacht fire at STP Palma on 29 October 2013

Spanish superyacht refit facility STP Palma has confirmed that on 29 October 2013 a 27 m vessel undergoing maintenance caught fire in the yard.

“Accidentally, the yacht ignited around 8:20 pm while it was being repaired and painted,” said Joan Rosselló, director of STP Palma. “The fire spread very quickly. Our emergency team activated the protocol immediately, and—together with three fire units from Palma and local ambulances—extinguished the blaze in under two hours.”

Rosselló added that although early signs point to paint fumes meeting a hot surface, the exact cause remains under investigation by the Balearic police. “At present we have no definitive root cause,” he explained.

Thanks to fast action and well-rehearsed safety measures, “no other vessels were harmed, and no one was injured or exposed to smoke,” Rosselló noted. “Our own fire equipment, combined with Palma’s fire brigade, acted in an exemplary manner, following the protocol we introduced after our 2010 incident.”

In February 2010 a yacht of the same size, II Sovereign, also caught fire during refit at the facility—spurring STP Palma to invest heavily in upgraded fire-suppression systems, additional hydrants, and quarterly emergency drills.

This incident—captured in a photograph shared on STP Palma’s official Facebook page—underscores the yard’s ongoing commitment to continuous safety improvements and rapid response.
