Cape Town Marina Officials Await Instruction Regarding Allen’s Superyacht

Octopus is currently berthed at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront marina

There is no word yet on the future of Paul Allen’s massive superyacht Octopus that is currently berthed at Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront marina.

Allen, who died on Monday after a battle with cancer, owned several superyachts of which the 414ft (126m) Octopus was the largest – one of the biggest superyachts in the world. It arrived in Cape Town earlier this month, reportedly with Allen on board, generating much public interest.

However, news of his death has prompted speculation within the local boating community as to the vessel’s future and whether it will now be sold.

“We’ve asked the agent and have had no feedback yet,” said V&A marina manager Joshio Fisher. “It is a concerning factor for us because it is a massive boat, and it is not like it can go anywhere,” Fisher said.

The vessel has made several visits to Cape Town where it kept a low profile – as per the agent’s request that it not become a public spectacle.

Some of Allen’s vessels were involved in maritime archaeology, including searches for shipwrecks and marine relics. Its extras include two helicopters, a basketball court and a movie theatre.

Allen was a co-founder of Microsoft.
