In June this year the Southern Wind shipyard in Cape Town launched their 4th hull in the successful SW 102 mini-series, and the second Raised Saloon version, Seawave. The yacht has proven itself to be a competent regatta contender, and just as comfortable as a cruiser that can be used as a successful charter yacht.

The strong partnership between the yard and the the design team at Nauta Design was continued during this project, who was responsible for the interior and exterior styling and layout of the vessel. The sail plan and on-deck systems are the work of Southern Wind’s in-house team of specialists, with Farr Yacht Design having been commissioned to take care of the naval architecture. The yacht’s flush deck is complimented by a sleek and low profile deckhouse, keeping work spaces as uncluttered and functional as possible.

Seawave’s hull, deck and superstructure are constructed using a resin-infused carbon fibre sandwich material, keeping to Southern Wind’s quest for building lightweight and voluminous yachts that adhere to stringent levels of durability and seaworthiness. In the cockpit one finds a foldable table that is perfect for family gatherings and safety briefings for the entire crew. Two deck fridges set within the coamings will no doubt come in handy during extended cruises and race days.

Inside, Nauta Design has created a fresh and bright environment that has been set up with true sailing practicalities in mind. Low interior furniture and work spaces are strategically placed throughout the main saloon, leaving good room to move about. Large 270-degree windows gives one an eye-level view onto the deck outside and beyond whist allowing an abundance of natural light into this main living area.

Directly forward of the main salon is a VIP studio that leads onto the master suite located in the bow section. Aft of the main salon a further four guests are accommodated in two twin cabins. The horizontal open grain teak furniture is continued here, with ivory linen bulkheads, light leather upholstery and carbon fibre detailing finishing of the accommodation areas.

Aft of this area is accommodation for Seawave’s 5 crew members, as well as a well equipped galley to port.

Seawave’s mast and boom is supplied by Southern Spars who also fitted the yacht’s carbon fibre performance rigging. Part of the on-deck performance package are high grade winches placed across the deck to allow for efficient and reliable manoeuvres when required.
