Sailpower Menorca describes itself as the ‘only dedicated sailboat service in Menorca’. The company has recently moved to bigger and better premises on the industrial estate in Mahón. Sailpower now has 300m2 of space for its yacht maintenance workshop, boat storage area and, perhaps most importantly, a new dedicated rigging area.
This will allow the company to take on bigger projects in the future and provide a full service for teak decking, yacht planking and cockpit refurbishment.
Laurence Vinnie set up Sailpower Menorca in 2003 to serve the needs of the owners of sailing boats based in Menorca and to provide a maintenance and repair service for visiting yachts and charter companies. His business has grown steadily as he has built up a reputation for knowledge, quality workmanship and reliability and he now employs a fully trained shipwright and a general maintenance engineer.
Laurence was a commercial skipper with over 30,000 logged miles when he arrived in Menorca at the helm of a 24m sailing boat during a long haul delivery in 2001. He had called into the Port of Mahón on several occasions in the past but this time he finally decided to relocate his young family to Menorca.
Laurence was born in Whitstable in Kent and grew up in Hastings where he trained as an apprentice machine engineer before becoming a commercial skipper, obtaining his RYA Yachtmaster commercial certificate in 1997. He worked first for Sunsail as a flotilla skipper and then he honed his current skills on the job as a delivery skipper, fixing pumps, navigation equipment, stripping down engines and repairing sails and rigging.
Sailpower Menora is the official distributor for many suppliers such as Harken and Lewmar and the safety equipment supplier, Oscar Sierra. The company can provide full rigging services, internal and external carpentry, marine engineering, 12 volt electrical systems, marine plumbing systems and fiberglass and gelcoat repairs.
Laurence and his co-workers can be seen regularly in the Port of Mahón but also in Port Addaya where they look after 12 sailing yachts for regular customers. Laurence says that 40% of his work is on behalf of other trade companies and call outs for charter companies based in Menorca and Mallorca. At Menorca Cruising we have used his services for the last 10 years and his support has been instrumental in allowing our company to succeed and grow on this small island where there is a limited service support network. We can recommend that you keep his telephone number to hand if you are visiting the island on a sailing yacht.
Laurence lives in Cala Santandria, south of Ciutadella, with his wife Lucy, a diving instructor, and 4 children. He has recently acquired his own sailing yacht named Xop Xop which he has re-rigged and refitted with a new teak cockpit ready for weekend sailing with the family. His three sons and his daughter Jazmin are keen dinghy sailors and divers and can often be seen collecting trophies in the local and Balearic sailing regattas.
