Dongfeng navigator’s favourite moment in Sanya
“Our arrival in Sanya – it’s difficult to beat that! We arrived with an e-x-c-e-l-l-e-n-t result, the best possible really. We won in China after sailing the entire leg in first place, and took the overall lead. That’s what I call a highlight…
“It was just a nice moment too. We had wind overnight, the sun rose, a good crowd was waiting for us outside the Serenity Marina, a lot of them being friends and acquaintances. It was intimate and emotional. I loved seeing all the faces, all these people we’ve worked with since the beginning.
“Plus we arrived home! China isn’t my home country but we’ve spent a couple of months training here last year and it’s a great place to train, it’s windy everyday. This is where our story started, this is where we tested and selected our Chinese guys. A year ago we thought there was a lot of work to be done. It’s still the case and it will be until the end of the race…
“But it was definitely my favourite moment and I fully enjoyed it. That’s what I love about the Volvo. We shared our joy with everyone, not just amongst ourselves.”
