Yacht Crew Without Borders

Yacht Crew Without Borders (YCWB) is a non-profit initiative in Fort Lauderdale that is bringing positive change to the yacht crew experience. Those who have been in the yachting industry know that being a yacht crew member, while having its many advantages, can at times be a very stressful and overwhelming occupation. It can be especially difficult to find the resources to cope with the stresses of the industry in a productive way.

YCWB wants to provide an alternative lifestyle for yacht crew that not only provides recharging support for the crew themselves, but will also provide opportunities for crew to become active in the community and make an impact in the lives of others in ports around the world.

YCWB will be creating fruitful connections between international yacht crew and port communities. By establishing relationships with active community service organizations in port cities around the world, YCWB will provide yacht crew with opportunities to become involved in projects, activities, and events that benefit the port cities, yacht crew, and the international yacht community at large.

The work of YCWB is directed toward providing alternative means of community involvement for yacht crew while they are in a port city waiting for their next job opportunity or aboard a stationary yacht. It is the belief of YCWB that yacht crew who become involved in voluntary service for the port community will have a richer overall experience that will invariably make them a more productive and well-rounded crew professional. Their work and involvement in these very worthy community projects will provide a sense of fulfilling achievement; a completeness to complement their experience as hard working, responsible crew members.

The most logical and efficient commencement of the YCWB mission is to seek out, build relations, and form collaborations with existing community service endeavors within major port cities. There are a great host of very worthwhile and inspiring projects in these areas that would stand to benefit greatly from the supplemental volunteer support that YCWB would be equipped to offer. From youth leadership programs to environmental cleanup, there is a broad spectrum of productive involvement available to motivated crew.

As the overall program develops YCWB will be able to use their resources and collective experiential research to develop new programs in these areas that may be more specifically suited to the skills and offerings of the international YCWB team.  The YCWB crew houses will serve as headquarters for the development and implementation of these new endeavors.

If crew members wish to participate in the community programs that are going on in the port cities where they are docked, it would not suit their intentions to stay at a typical crew house where there is little opportunity for healthy rest and rejuvenation. The environment of their quarters should be conducive to the mindset and overall tone of their intentions as members of a progressive community. The lodging provided by YCWB will serve as a serene and supportive environment that is reflective of a calm and healthy body and mind.

The crew lodging provided by YCWB crew housing is designed to nurture all aspects of crew wellness in a way that offers multifaceted benefit to the entire yachting industry as well as the port communities of which they occupy. YCWB houses will make available healing and rejuvenation services such as yoga, massage, meditation, nourishing whole food meals, and gardening. In addition to the important focus of personal wellness and vitality, the YCWB crew housing centers will offer practical and holistic personal development and career training. With comprehensive courses in personal growth, time management, and interpersonal relationships, YCWB strives to offer learning opportunities that will make crew more confident, productive, and socially adept members of a professional working environment.

Denise Dobbs, founder of YCWB, is a long time crew member herself who has developed a successful career as a holistic wellness professional in the South Florida Community. It has long been her intention to actualize a practical connection between her passion for personal healing and her comprehensive experience as a member of yacht crew. Denise holds a high value on community involvement, hence her strong drive to build a cohesive conscious community within the yachting industry and connecting that family with the world community as a whole.

She has been actively pursuing this project since 2006 in the form of her holistic yacht crew agency, Hands Om Crew (HandsOmCrew.com). As a practitioner of liberation breathing, a yoga instructor, and a holistic business consultant, Denise has been using her talents to bring support to the South Florida community with special regard for yacht crew. Along with her offerings of clean, conscious crew lodging, she has conducted a wide range of innovative and insightful trainings. “Drama-free living aboard yachts” is one such training Denise has developed in which she outlines many of the potential situations that may arise while working with others in close quarters. She thoroughly demonstrates practical methods for handling them in a graceful and constructive manner while maintaining poise and inner calm.  Spring 2012 she was certified as a Yoga Peace Ambassador through the United Nations and this is where YCWB vision began.

As a non-profit organization YCWB relies on the generous contributions of those who will benefit from their projects and offerings as there are significant expenses in the implementation of the vital aspects of the organization, not the least of which is crew housing. YCWB is seeking assistance from the community to secure the real estate necessary to develop the physical crew houses that will serve as the headquarters of their community service missions.

SPONSORSHIP

As a non-profit organization YCWB relies on the generous contributions from the yachting and local communities who both benefit from these programs. There are significant expenses in the implementation of vital aspects of the organization, not the least of which is crew housing. Currently, YCWB is seeking assistance from the community to secure real estate necessary to develop the physical crew houses that will serve as the headquarters of their community service missions.

YCWB is also asking for donations to provide scholarships for crew who cannot otherwise afford this important and valuable program. Scholarship recipients will receive comfortable lodging, hands-on support in personal healing and full access to the educational in-house career development programs offered by YCWB. These scholarships will be instrumental in expanding the YCWB community and mission.  Any contribution to YCWB is an investment in the futures of the many hardworking men and women who serve on yachts around the world.
