Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) took to the water in early November for the first time from their temporary base in Southampton, sailing the team’s foiling AC45. The boat originally raced under BAR colours during the America’s Cup World Series in 2012-13, and has subsequently been modified to fly on hydrofoils.
The America’s Cup commercial commissioner, Harvey Schiller, announced on Saturday November 1 that the 2015 America’s Cup World Series would be the first stage of the 2017 America’s Cup. With no official information to go on, we can only assume all teams will work on their own AC45 to adapt them for foiling in readiness for the first AC45 series in 2015.
After sailing the BAR foiling AC45, Sir Ben Ainslie said: “For us sailors it’s a real privilege to get out there and sail one of these boats. It’s been a great first day and it’s a good start, but it’s only a start and we have a lot of hard work and training to do over the coming months.”
